After I fix it, I’m going to sell my car.

I will inherit my dad’s Fit when he gets his 4Runner. I expect to get $5,000 for my car once it’s fixed up. That should give me a good starting budget for a car I actually want. As some of you may know, I really want a V8 Lexus sedan/coupe. I’m also open to an SUV as long as it’s in the Toyota family and no older than an 80-series Land Cruiser.

This wasn’t an easy decision to make. I’m somewhat emotionally attached to my Accord. It was my first car. I took it across the West Coast as I moved from home to college to home. I will miss it, but it’s time to let go of it. I’ve had it for four years to the day (October 3, 2012).

Kinja'd!!!

I will have to go out for one last photoshoot though.

Gotta do whatcha gotta do.

I remember ditching my 1997 Monte Carlo LS after 5 years after it lunched a second trans mission and the subframe decided it had had enoygh autocross shenanigans and tried to leave the car.

It hurt for a bit then it didn’t hurt at all when I got my second car. You’ll make new memories, better memories, as long as you get to pick it.

....granted I bought a fiesta ST a few cars later and it’s like none if my previous cars existed so lesson learned - the sooner you get a good car, the sooner your old and crappy cars don’t matter.

Do not listen to this man, for he is obviously driven insane due to the loss of his car. I’m still bitter about dad making me get rid of my first car only for it to end up in the crusher. Keep everything forever!

I bought a FiST and kept my old one. It’s honestly made me appreciate my 4Runner more.

Will you be fully responsible for the Fit or is he just loaning it to you for a while?

I own a 2009 base model Accent and want to import a Polish-built FIAT 126p as a ‘fun’ car...where does that put me in the ‘old and crappy’ being forgotten department? :P

Crappy can be really relative. I know many people who got a bad example of a good car....and I got a few of then too. I had a Buick Riviera that crapped out when it rained. Nothing would ever fix it. Great car, but mine failed in the rain.....ergo, crappy car.

It has to be both old and crappy. As in the car doesn’t do anything well. My Monte carlo failed to function as an automobile. Pretty sure that is peak crapiness.

Maybe I missed it, but what’s wrong with the Hoonda?

Also I have some former clients that run dealerships for when you start looking to buy.

The power steering shit the bed. Likely a rock was kicked up my the tire and struck the reservoir, causing fluid to leak and the pump to burn up. I still have power steering, but my brakes are in need of maintenance. The dealership wanted a lot of money for it, so I decided to fix it myself and sell it once it’s all done.

Fully responsible. It’ll be temporary though. When I get a car I want, we will sell the Fit.

The 4Runner has to have its plug wires zip tied to the distributor for it to run because they fall off. There is a sensor held in by tape. The shocks are gone. The sway bar links are bent, because they are edible apparently. And it gets a solid 10mpg. By all accounts it’s a POS. Just a reliable POS, as long as zip ties are in it.

Go to http://car-part.com/ . A used car needs used parts, it looks like $125 will buy you a new pump. Throw a new belt on and call it done.

Also, Honda new aftermarket brake rotors are dirt cheap, and pads are too. Check out http://www.rockauto.com/  New rotors are about $140 for all 4, $70 more for ceramic pads front and rear.

Hand tools are needed for the pump.

For the brakes, good learning experience.

1. When you change the rotors, take about 10 seconds and try to screw out the phillips retaining screw. Then drill it out.

2. You need a big screw driver to push back the front pad pistons using the pads through the window in the front of the caliper. A couple of sockets and you will have the fronts done.

3. On the rears, do not attempt to take the parking brake cable off the caliper, instead take the cable bracket off the upright or trailing arm so you can move the caliper out of the way. Then use a oversize screw driver of one of these from Harbor freight for like $5 to rotate the piston back into the caliper.

Kinja'd!!!

Finally - I would only change the brake rotors if they are warped or badly scored. Shops always change the rotors cause they are cheap and the blame and liability for old rotors are not on them. However, if there is no pulse in the brakes, and they look “ok” you in my opinion are better with the rotors you have than rolling the dice on new rotors.

Servicing disk brakes yourself is the easiest $400 you will ever save yourself.
